Being a Product Manager for 6 Months
Actually, by today, I already back on track as a QA Engineer (still onboard)
Hi,
I quit my job as a QA last year and tried a new role as a Project Manager for six months, which really changed my perspective on a product. I will share this with you guys, and this is also an important thing to know as a QA.
Be respectful with the Product Manager on your team.
Treat your Project Manager with respect, even if you disagree with their decisions. Remember, PMs, with a lot of consideration make decisions to manage the team. If you have concerns or criticisms, express them in a professional manner. Avoid personal attacks or blaming the colleague for problems, And focus on finding solutions.
The PM is also a human, sometimes making a mistake, but as long as not repeating the same mistake, that’s okay.
One thing I have learned since I started working is that sometimes people/maybe I make a mistake and repeat it again and (not again). This has taught me that mistake repetition is really bad.
Also, PMs are human and make mistakes just like anyone else. Instead of dwelling on their errors, focus on learning from them and preventing them from happening again. And you can help create a positive and productive working environment.
Collaboration is important
Collaboration is key to successful project/product management. Work closely with your PM and other team members to achieve common goals. Share information openly, provide constructive feedback, and be willing to compromise. When necessary, be open to working overtime to ensure project deadlines are met. By working together as a team, you can overcome challenges and deliver high-quality results.
p.s. actually I really hate overtime, but … (we need to finish this to achieve our agreed goals)
Need to be strict with the sprint contract.
Adhering to the sprint contract is crucial for project success. Stick to the agreed-upon timelines and deliverables. If you encounter any issues or delays, communicate them proactively to your PM and the team. Be prepared to adjust the sprint plan if necessary, but always strive to meet your commitments.
But as PM, we need to prepare an alternative plan.
Be consistent, FOR EVERYONE all the team (not only PM)
Consistency is key to successful project management. Maintain a consistent approach to your work, and take ownership of your tasks and responsibilities. Encourage your team members to do the same. By being consistent and reliable, you can build trust and respect among your colleagues.
Remember, consistency is not just about the project manager. It’s about the entire team working together to achieve common goals.
Daily Monitoring is important for PM.
Daily monitoring is a vital part of a PM’s role. Keep track of project progress, identify potential risks, and address issues promptly. Hold regular meetings with your team to discuss updates, concerns, and challenges. By staying on top of things, you can ensure that the project stays on track and meets its objectives. This also helps the PM to find an alternative plan if there’s a problem in the middle of the project.
Good Documentation, Less Distraction 👍
Good documentation is essential for efficient project/product management. Maintain clear and concise documentation of project activities, decisions, and progress. Avoid unnecessary distractions that can hinder your productivity. By maintaining good documentation and minimizing distractions, you can improve your focus and efficiency.
and (actually) a lot …
Thanks. Have a nice weekend.
